Doris E. (Chelewski) Johnson

Doris E. Johnson, age 98, of Plainfield, Wisconsin passed away peacefully, Sunday afternoon, January 15, 2017 at Portage County Health Care Center in Stevens Point.

Doris was born May 22, 1918 in the town of Oasis to Enoch and Clara (Jaragoski) Chelewski.  She was the 3rd of 5 children.

Doris married Merritt Johnson on March 26, 1940. They were married 54 years.  Merritt preceded her in death on April 29, 1994.  They had one daughter Clara who survives.

Doris loved to bake and knit.  She made many afghans for family, friends and cookies for St. Paul’s bake sales.  She enjoyed working in her garden and doing her own yard work.  Doris was always willing to “lend a helping hand” when and where ever needed.

Together Merritt and Doris traveled to North Carolina, Alaska, Oregon and California.

Doris is survived by her daughter, Clara Baker, Stevens Point; her granddaughters, Teresa McIntee Bruno (Mark Bruno) of Pebble Beach, CA., Teona Baker (Robert Bailey) Bakersfield, CA., Gail Doss, KY., Mellanie Cornet, NC., Marguerite Quinlan, KY.; great grandchildren, Beth Hetzel, Stevens Point, Travis (Brittany) Cornet, NC, Eric (Stephanie) Maynard, NC, Troy Cornet, NC., Brandon (Emma) Cornet, Allison Quinlan, KY.; 12 great-great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Merritt, her parents, two sisters, Irene Vroman and Blanch Walsh and one brother, Enoch “Bud” and three nephews.

The family would like to thank Ann and LaVerne Challoner and Joe Farago for being such wonderful neighbors and looking out for Doris while she was still at home, THANK YOU! THANK YOU!  We would also like to thank the South Wing staff at Portage County Health Care Center for the wonderful care they provided and Heartland Hospice for their care and compassion.  Memorials may be directed to St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Plainfield or Portage County Health Care Center, Stevens Point.

Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, May 27, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. at St. Paul Catholic Church, Plainfield. Inurnment will be in the parish cemetery.  There will be no visitation.  A lunch and Celebration of Life Service will continue at Doris's daughters home following the committal services.
