John Anthony Meronk, a beloved father, grandfather, and friend, was called to heaven on October 9, 2024. He leaves behind a family who loved him deeply, including his children Jim and Jenny Meronk, Julia Meronk, Robert “Bobbo” and Melissa Meronk, and Wayne and Naomi Spritka. John cherished his grandchildren: Johnathan Meronk, Jonah and Sawyer Meronk, Easton Hans, and Ashton, Gracen, Brealyn, and Ross Spritka. He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Julia Meronk, and his brother, David and sister-in-law Barbara Meronk.
Born on November 12, 1942 in Dubuque, Iowa John attended Catholic school in Milwaukee, WI. In 1960 John enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving as an Airman First Class (A1C) Flight Mechanic from January 1960 to November 1963. His dedication and service to his country reflected his courage and commitment to ideals larger than himself.
John lived a life of independence and was a man of many talents. He was the ultimate mentor, guidance counselor, listener, and advice giver. A devoted farmer and homemaker, John provided an open door, a warm home, and a safe place for many young adults seeking their way in life. His unwavering dedication to his family was evident in everything he did.
He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, classic movies, and culinary intrigue. An avid reader, John’s interests ranged from the Civil War to the NASA space program, as seen in the ever-present stack of National Geographics by his side. His legacy is one of love, dedication to the countless lives he touched through his kindness and generosity. Known for his strong opinions and worldly perspective, John often shared his wisdom with those around him. John was always interested to hear what was happening with all of his grandchildren, whether by blood, adopted, or acquired. He had a commitment to see things through to the end, a value he held dear and passes along to all he had encountered. A reminder of his insightful and thought-provoking nature, if ever asked how old he was, John would always reply, “Not a day over 29!”
Jim, the oldest son, you have always carried the mantle with grace and strength. Your love of reading, learning about new interesting topics, and tinkering are all innate qualities inherited from your father. “Drive safe” aka I love you!
Julia, you are the foundational rock of John's life. He lived and breathed for your caring hand and persistent tenacity to keep him in line with all things of the world. His legacy may be the fact and knowledge of your independent spirit, and that he spent a lifetime being the best father and dad he could. From your earliest steps until just these past weeks, you were and will always be the twinkle in his deep blue eyes. Remember; “There is no crying in baseball.”
Bob, he is certainly proud of the man you have become. You are a reflection of your father in more ways than you know. Inherited qualities of stubbornness and obstinance will serve you well in your parenting years. Always remember; “it could be worse…it could be raining”. I know he is proud to the moon and back that you named your son after him.
Wayne, he always loved to hear your voice and listen to stories of life at sea and the endless new ports off call you would visit. Your love for adventure, selfless devotion to your family, and willingness to serve others are certainly traits of John’s you have picked up along the way. Always remember; "Believe none of what you hear and half of what you see."
So we lift up our hearts…we are thankful, and we are grateful to have known the man who never turned a day older than “29” ….
