Stephen Scott Johnson (Scott), 68, of Hancock, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 13, 2017 at home in his sleep.
Scott was born November 5, 1948 in Rockford, Illinois to Ray and Norma (Talleckson) Johnson, who have both preceded him in death.
Scott is survived by his two brothers, Charles Johnson, and Gary Johnson, both of LaCrosse, WI., daughter, Stacy Merritt of Hancock, WI., son, Brady Johnson of Rockford, IL., and son Eric Johnson of Chandler, AZ. Scott has four granddaughters, Tiffany of Illinois, and Jessica, Josi, and Jennifer of Tennessee, and has a niece, two nephews, and great grandchildren. Scott was married to Connie Wysong of Rockford, IL. in 1969 and was married for 20 years until their divorce.
In life, Scott served in the United States Navy having enlisted at 17 years of age, and served aboard the U.S.S. Kitty Hawk aircraft carrier while deployed to Vietnam. His Naval work included avionics, ultra-high frequency communications systems, radar, and sonar. His service was awarded with the National Defense Service Medal (2nd Award), Viet Nam Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Navy Expeditionary Medal, Sea Service Ribbon (2nd Award, Viet Nam Campaign Medal (5th award) and Good Conduct award (3rd award). He was honorably discharged from the Navy after 10 years of service and spent the next 10 years working in various technical jobs including Eder Industries and Muzak, and was self-employed for several years installing and repairing commercial telephone, intercom, and security systems. Scott re-enlisted in the Navy in 1986 and was stationed at Barbers Point Naval Air Station, Hawaii, followed by stationing at Miramar Naval Air Station in San Diego, CA. Scott was again honorably discharged in 1991 and began working for Titan as an electron gun technician, followed by working for Steris as a particle accelerator technician doing gamma irradiation work. Scott was an intelligent man who enjoyed engineering and technology, and was considered by many to be a master craftsman in woodworking, leather tooling, and lapidary. He enjoyed spending time with friends and watching movies (especially Sci-fi).Scott made friends easily and was loved by many. He will be missed.
A gathering of friends and family to celebrate Scott's life will be held at Johnny B's, N1321 County Road B, Richford, Wisconsin, 54930, on Thursday, August 17, 2017 from 4pm to 8pm. All are welcome to come and share memories of Scott.
