Walter J. “Jim” Callahan, age 80, of Hancock, passed away Friday morning, April 29, 2022 at St. Michael’s Hospital in Stevens Point.

He was born August 3, 1941 in Waushara County, the son of Walter G. and Martha P. (Weynuth) Callahan.  He married Madeline J. Baillod on September 5, 1964.

Jim was a 1959 graduate of Tri-County High School. After high school he served his country for 4 years in the United States Navy. The majority of this time was spent on a Destroyer.  When he returned to the area, he began his career at Nekoosa Papers and retired after 36 years. Jim was very proud of his military career and served with the Hancock/Coloma American Legion Post 343 until his death. Jim was also a faithful member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Plainfield and was an active member of the Church Council and the Knights of Columbus where he held the capacity of Grand Knight for many years.  As an active member of the community, Jim served as Town Board Supervisor and President of the Hancock Sportsman’s Club. He was proud of his Irish heritage and enjoyed embellishing tales when given the opportunity. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed trap shooting, hunting, fishing and spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Madeline J. Callahan; two daughters, Stacy (Kevin) Bickett; Renee Callahan; his six Grandchildren, Dylan (Alexa), Amanda, Sabrina, Jonas, Jacob, Jessie; six Great Grandchildren; and one Sister, Ruby Garrett. Further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many special friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his infant son Craig, his three Brothers, and his five Sisters.

A rosary service will be held on Wednesday, May 4, 2022 at 4:00 p.m. with a visitation to follow from 4:15 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in the Stahl Funeral Home, Plainfield.  A visitation will also be held on Thursday, May 5, 2022 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church from 9:30 a.m. until the Knights of Columbus services at 10:45 a.m.. This will be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. in the St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Plainfield. Burial with full military honors to follow in the parish cemetery.   In lieu of flowers, memorials have been set up
